This challenge is based on showing how much creativity can be expressed, even when you only have a single set to work with!
Eight InnovaLUG members each used a single copy of set
70676 Lloyd's Titan Mech to create an original model.
We didn't share any pictures with each other until all the builds were completed, and the variety of scenes built shows just how limitless the LEGO system is, even when working with a very limited parts selection.
Keep reading to see all the builds, and cast your vote on which is best!

1. Swampcamp by Jaap
"After receiving the set and throwing all pieces into one big pile, my eye was immediately drawn towards the big trans-neon-green pieces. I really wanted to use these pieces into my builds, as they are one of the few iconic pieces of the set and because I like the challenge with such a big piece.
It didn't take long until I discovered they would make a good cockpit by putting 2 next to each other. And there I got the idea of a fighter jet. But soon after building the cockpit I got stuck and decided to build something different. So I started on some dragon head, but it looked too much like a crocodile. So another start of a build I wasn't fully satisfied with. At that point I decided to continue on it another time, so I put away the pieced without even sorting the half-finished creations.
About a week later I picked up the pieces again and while looking at the 'rejected creations' I saw that I could turn the plane into some kind of futuristic swamp boat, while transforming the dragon into a crocodile. I mean, it already looked like one, so why not use the failure?
After a few hours of building and struggling I completed the build, and even added a little fortress so we stay into the Ninjago theme. For the first time of doing an alternate build of a set, I had definitely underestimated it, but I had fun! I'm even pretty happy with the result!"
2. Llorian Star Fleet by Isaac
"Lloyd's mech has loads of interesting slope elements, that I thought would be a lot of fun to incorporate in some spaceships. And the parts selection is certainly well suited to the sci-fi genre, though I was surprised at how few tiles were included. My general strategy was to mess around with different combinations of elements until I got shapes I was pleased with. Loads of brackets in the set meant it was easy to incorporate SNOT connections. I used the various joints to give some alternate configuration options to each space craft, with every one featuring adjustable engines or moving wings. Overall I'm quite pleased with the finished models, and would happily make another alt-build with this set as it has loads of potential."
3. Dragon Attack by John
"Doing alt-builds isn't something I have a lot of experience with, so this was a fun project. It took me a while to decide on what to build, but after several failed attempts, I settled on a dragon. It was quite difficult at times, particularly the legs, which I'm still not overly happy with. After finishing the dragon there was still a rather large pile of parts left, so I fiddled around with some micro castles for the dragon to attack. It was definitely a fun challenge!"
4. Dragonfly by Geneva
"There were two pieces from this mech that I decided right away I had to use: the trans-neon-green flaps and the 2x2 white slopes with that interesting hexagon print. A dragonfly just made sense after that, and incorporating the dragon hilts as antenna was a nice bonus! This dragonfly actually has a good deal of underside built which sadly can't be seen from this one angle, but it's still pretty small, so I decided to add a flower and a bit of algae-infested water. Afterwards I actually built a second alternate build (a micro power plant in fact), but ended up choosing this one as my contribution!"
5. Dragon Heights by Josiah
"I decided to make things challenging for myself, by trying to make a natural snow-scape and a temple from the parts of the mech, and it was pretty tricky as I kept running out of parts, but it was a very fun alt build!

6. Upon a Ninja's Nightstand by Isaiah
"One of my main goals when I figured out we'd be doing alt builds for Lloyd's Mech was to incorporate at least one of the very unusual parts that I would probably usually avoid in my build - either the trans-green wing parts, Zane's hat, or the new style of spinner, or maybe that huge sword. My first thought was a spaceship of some type, which morphed into a speeder with the tornado as the propulsion and the sword at the front, and that got about 50% done and then refuse to get finished, haha. So after a final smash of that one I went with the other idea I had, which was to flip the tornado and use it as a lamp shade. That came together very nicely (although with more parts I could probably have got it all attached, which would have been... convenient, to say the least, XP), and then after puzzling over something to go with it and trying a few things, I ended up going with the ninja theme and just putting together a couple of swords and a swordstand. I also found out I could very nearly spell Ninja with the large dark grey slopes, but there weren't quite enough of those in the set to do that, so I left it out for this shot - I'll edit it together and post it to Flickr soon(ish) though!"
7. Dragon by Noel
"This was definitely a challenge for me. Doing alt-builds is not a building muscle that I've used a whole lot. The variety of pieces in this set is pretty good. There are all sorts of interesting wedges and tiles and ball-joints. However, what the set does not have are lots of basic bricks and I think that crippled me a little bit. There were so many special pieces that it was hard to get started. I tried doing some sort of vehicle using gears to have some moving parts but that didn't work out.
After that I started on the head of the dragon and gradually worked my way down to the tail. The funnest part to build was probably the wings. The sand green tiles allowed for some cool scaly textures. Overall doing this was an interesting experience for me. I tried something new and it definitely pointed out some holes in my building ability."
8. Lloyd Beast by Kevin
"This was my second alternate build, having done one with 70808 Super Cycle Chase previously. The abundance of the Nexo Knights shield pieces grabbed my eye immediately, and after some experimenting, I settled on using them as teeth. The rest of the model evolved into a beast that was inspired by Chinese lion costumes used in Lion dances during Chinese festivals. The most difficult part was creating a substantial body and legs, as I had already consumed many pieces for the head. Even though Lloyd’s Titan Mech appears to have many white and olive-green pieces, there isn’t too much when you break it down. Regardless, I’m satisfied with what I ended up with."
